In 2011-12:
  • approximately 53% of Australia's total land area was reported as agricultural holdings, a 2% increase since 2009-10.
  • from a state perspective, the lowest proportion of land managed by agricultural businesses was in Tasmania (24% of state area) while the highest was in Queensland (79% of state area).
  • the largest shift in percentage of land reported as agricultural holdings was in South Australia which recorded an increase of 9% since 2009-10.
  • the majority of agricultural businesses were engaged in grazing activities (75%), a 3% decrease since 2009-10. This was the most common activity in all states, except South Australia, where cropping activity was most common (66% of agricultural businesses in that state).
  • about 88% of Australian agricultural land was mainly used for grazing, with 12% on improved pasture and 75% on other agricultural land.
  • agricultural businesses reported that 8% of agricultural land was mainly used for crops, ranging from less than 1% in the Northern Territory to 35% in Victoria.
