ABOUT SCHOOLS, AUSTRALIA 2011

Schools, Australia 2011 (cat. no. 4221.0) is drawn from the National Schools Statistics Collection (NSSC) managed by the ABS and contains statistics for students, schools and staff as at the schools census date (5 August, 2011).

This is an annual publication of data on schools, students and in-school staff involved in the provision, or administration, of primary and secondary education, in government and non-government schools, for all Australian states and territories.

All data are available by year; state and territory; and affiliation (government or non-government with some data also available in further subcategories of the non-government classification (Catholic or Independent). Schools, students and staff may be further classified as described below.

Schools may be classified by:

    • school type (primary, secondary, combined, special)
    • size of primary enrolment and secondary enrolment.
Students are available as counts of students, or counts of full-time equivalent students, and may be classified by:
    • full-time or part-time status
    • Indigenous status
    • sex
    • school level (primary, secondary)
    • Year (Grade)
    • age as at July 1.
In-school staff are available as counts of staff or full time equivalent value of staff. These are generally reported against the usual school level the staff work in; however, values include prorated figures where staff may be across more than one school level, particularly for staff in combined schools and staff working in schools, but not at one specific school.

In-school staff are available as counts of staff, or counts of full-time equivalent staff, and may be classified by:

    • school level
    • sex
    • function.
Full time equivalent in-school staff may be classified by:
    • level of school education (primary or secondary)
    • major function (broad job roles)
    • sex.
Counts of in-school staff may be classified by:
    • major function (broad job roles)
    • sex.
Outputs published in Schools,Australia 2011 (cat. no. 4221.0) also include ratios of full-time equivalent students to teaching staff and measures of student engagement, including school participation rates and apparent retention rates.

Comparable statistics are provided for each of the states and territories, and nationally where appropriate.

These data are sourced from the National Schools Statistics Collection (NSSC) (non-finance), which is a joint undertaking of the various state and territory departments of education, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA). The scope of the collection is bound by the definitions of schools, students and staff which are available on request in the ABS Notes, Instructions and Tabulations (NIT) document.
