Statistics on international travel movements of persons arriving in Australia for short term trips (less than 1 year). It is the number of international border crossings rather than the number of people.

Key statistics

Overseas visitors arriving in Australia for a short-term trip in August 2019 (trend estimates):

  • Increased 0.9% since the previous month to 812,600 trips
  • Increased 5.2% since the same month previous year
  • Reported China as the largest source country, accounting for 16% of all visitor arrivals.

The three leading source countries for visitor arrivals to Australia in August 2019 were:

  • China (127,900 trips)
  • New Zealand (118,600)
  • USA (69,800).

Among the top ten source countries, the highest annual increases were recorded for:
  • India (17.5%)
  • Singapore (15.1%)
  • USA (8.7%).

  • Korea, South (-2.6%)

For those who visited Australia in August 2019, compared to the same month of the previous year, there was:
  • an increase of 57.2% more visitors to Tasmania
  • an increase of 23.2% more visitors to the ACT.
