SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during April 2019 (769,300 movements) decreased by 0.4% when compared with March 2019 (772,100 movements). In April 2019, short-term visitor arrivals were 0.5% higher than in April 2018.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during April 2019. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for April 2018 and April 2019 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Japan (11.8%), followed by the United States of America (6.8%) and New Zealand (3.9%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Malaysia (-10.5%), South Korea (-8.6%) and China (-6.1%).

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during April 2019 (917,500 movements) decreased by 0.5% when compared with March 2019 (922,400 movements). When compared to April 2018, short-term resident returns remained steady.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in April 2019. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for April 2018 and April 2019 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (5.8%), Indonesia (0.5%) and New Zealand (0.3%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for the United States of America (-6.4%), Vietnam (-5.8%) and Thailand (-4.5%).
