JANUARY KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES

  • Trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during January 2007 (475,900 movements) increased by 0.8% compared with December 2006. This followed monthly increases of 0.9% for November 2006 and 0.8% for December 2006.
  • Currently, short-term visitor arrivals are 5.1% higher than when the series last troughed in July 2006 (452,600 movements) and 3.5% higher than in January 2006.
  • During January 2007, short-term resident departures (424,400 movements) increased by 0.6% compared with December 2006. This followed monthly increases of 0.5% each for November 2006 and December 2006.
  • Currently, short-term resident departures are 8.4% higher than in January 2006, the last time the series troughed (391,500 movements).


SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates for short-term visitor arrivals during January 2007 (476,600 movements) decreased by 1.2% compared with December 2006. This followed a monthly decrease of 0.3% for November 2006 and a monthly increase of 3.2% for December 2006.
  • Short-term resident departures for January 2007 (422,700 movements) decreased by 1.6% compared with December 2006 and followed a monthly decrease of 2.7% for November 2006 and a monthly increase of 4.2% for December 2006.


ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original movement terms, there were 458,200 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia and 369,500 short-term resident departures from Australia during January 2007.
