CONSTRAINTS ON AND MOTIVES FOR PARTICIPATION IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL RECREATION

The 2005-06 MPHS also included questions about the reasons for participating or not participating in sport or physical recreation. Common responses for not participating included being too busy or lack of time; age or health related reasons and 'not interested'. Motives broadly included health reasons and enjoyment. The information from this topic is summarised in Participation in Sports and Physical Recreation, Australia, 2005-06 (cat. no. 4177.0).

A separate report on barriers and motives to participation has also been prepared for the Standing Committee on Recreation and Sport Research Group. See Motivators and Constraints to Participation in Sports and Physical Recreation, 2005-06, report.
