NORTHERN TERRITORY

MEDIAN AGE

  • At June 2017, the Northern Territory (NT) had a median age (the age at which half the population is older and half is younger) of 32.6 years, which was the lowest median age of all states and territories.
  • The median age of the population in Greater Darwin was 33.6 years at June 2017, up slightly from 32.9 at June 2012, while the median age in the rest of the NT increased from 29.6 to 30.9 years over the same period.
  • The SA2 in the NT with the highest median age in 2017 was Ross (45.2 years) which is a suburb of Alice Springs, followed by Alligator (41.6) and Virginia (39.5).
  • The SA2s with the lowest median ages in the NT were Gulf (25.4 years) and Victoria River (25.5), both in the Katherine region, followed by Thamarrurr (26.0).

SEX RATIO
  • The NT had the highest sex ratio of all states and territories in 2017, with 108.1 males per 100 females.
  • Males outnumbered females in both Greater Darwin (111.5 males per 100 females) and the rest of the NT (103.2).
  • The SA2 of Howard Springs in the Darwin rural area had the highest sex ratio in the NT, with 294.1 males per 100 females. This was followed by Weddell (128.2) in Litchfield and Darwin City (126.3).
  • The SA2s with the lowest sex ratios were Tanami (88.2 males per 100 females) and Yuendumu - Anmatjere (90.4), both in central Australia.

AGE AND SEX DISTRIBUTION
  • Greater Darwin had a lower proportion of its population under 25 years of age at June 2017 (32% compared with 39% for the rest of the NT) and a higher proportion of people aged 25 years and above (68% compared with 61%).
