STATE SUMMARY

Western Australia's (WA's) estimated resident population at 30 June 2008 was 2.17 million people, an increase of 58,200 since June 2007. This financial-year increase was the state's largest since records commenced. It represents an annual growth rate of 2.8%, which was higher than the average annual growth rate (2.1%) for the five years to June 2008.

Western Australia's growth rate in 2007-08 was also the fastest of all of the states and territories. The state population as a proportion of Australia's population increased from 9.8% in 2003 to 10.1% in June 2008.

PERTH STATISTICAL DIVISION

The Perth SD experienced the state's largest growth, increasing by 43,400 people (2.8%) in 2007-08 to reach 1.6 million people. Almost three-quarters of WA's population resided in the Perth SD and three-quarters of the state's population growth occurred in this SD in 2007-08.

The populations of almost all of the thirty LGAs within the Perth SD, increased during 2007-08. Five LGAs - Wanneroo (C), Swan (C), Rockingham (C), Stirling (C) and Cockburn (C) - each grew by more than 3,000 people in the year to June 2008. Together these accounted for over half of the growth in the metropolitan area. Wanneroo (C) and Stirling (C) are in the north of the metropolitan area, Swan (C) is to the east and Rockingham (C) and Cockburn (C) are coastal LGAs to the south of the city.

In the Perth SD, the fastest-growing LGAs in 2007-08 were Perth (C) (up by 10.8%), Serpentine-Jarrahdale (S) (7.6%) and Wanneroo (S) (6.8%).

POPULATION CHANGE IN THE REGIONS

Each of the nine Statistical Divisions within the state experienced population growth in the year to June 2008.

The South West SD was the state's fastest-growing region, increasing by 3.9% (8,900 people) in 2007-08. All LGAs in the South West SD experienced growth during the year with Murray (S) growing the fastest (6.0%), and Mandurah (C) gaining the most people (3,200). Harvey (S), Dardanup (S), Capel (S) and Busselton (S) also experienced growth at a rate faster than the region's average.

Outside the metropolitan area, the Kimberley was the state's second fastest-growing SD, with 2.8% growth, followed by South Eastern SD with 2.3%. With the shires of Wyndham-East Kimberley (S) and Ravensthorpe (S) leading the way, growth in these areas partly followed developments associated with the expansion of the resources sector.

Although not apparent at the broader (SD) level, 37% of LGAs outside the Perth metropolitan area experienced either population decline or had no change in their populations during the year to 2008. Of these, nearly two-thirds already had populations fewer than one thousand.

CENTRES OF POPULATION

At June 2008, Western Australia's centre of population was adjacent to the Avon River in the LGA of Toodyay (S), approximately 60 kilometres north-east of Perth. The centre of population has moved 3.8 kilometres south-west since June 2003, reflecting the large population growth in Perth SD and South West SD.

For the Perth SD, the centre of population was in the Swan River, just south-west of Perth's central business district.
