ESTIMATED RESIDENT POPULATION REBASING UPDATE

After each Census of Population and Housing, the Demography program undertakes the process of 'rebasing' the estimated resident population. This process involves taking the Census results, PES results and Overseas Arrivals and Departures (OAD) and Net Overseas Migration (NOM) data as well as backdating (adding deaths and subtracting births that have occurred between June 30 and Census Night), in order to make a new population base - i.e. ERP based on the latest Census data. Rebasing also involves revising the intercensal population estimates, in this case for all quarters between 2006 and 2011, as well as all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population estimates and sub-state estimates.

For more information on the release timetable for ERP rebasing, see Information Paper: Rebasing Population Estimates, Australia, 2011, Aug 2011 (cat. no. 3101.0.55.001).
