RELEASE OF DEATHS, AUSTRALIA, 2010 (CAT. NO. 3302.0)
Deaths, Australia, 2010 (cat. no. 3302.0) was released on 10 November 2011. This product presents statistics on deaths and mortality for Australia, states and territories, and sub-state regions based on calendar year of registration data. Data presented in this publication includes information on characteristics of the deceased such as place of usual residence, age at death, sex, Indigenous status and country of birth. Information is also provided on infant deaths, life expectancy and death rates. Statistics on deaths by sub-state regions is also available for download from the ABS website.
There were 143,500 deaths registered in Australia in 2010, which is approximately 2,700 more that the number registered in 2009 (140,800). Of the total deaths registered in 2010, 2,800 deaths where the deceased was recorded as being an Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, or both on the death registration form.
In 2010, the standardised death rate (which eliminates the effect of the changing age structure of the population over time) was the lowest on record at 5.7 deaths per 1,000. In 1990, the standardised death rate was 8.6 deaths per 1,000 standard population. The infant mortality rate decreased slightly, from 4.3 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2009 to 4.1 in 2010.
As well as death rates being the lowest on record, life expectancy has continued to increase in 2010. Based on current death rates, a boy born in 2008-2010 can expect to live 79.5 years, while a girl can expect to live 84.0 years.
