ABOUT THESE STATISTICS

The topics included in the Innovation module of the Business Characteristics Survey (BCS), and presented here, covered the range of practices specifically related to innovation or factors that influenced innovative activity. The topics chosen for the Innovation module were developed in consultation with key users of Innovation statistics and draw strongly on the Oslo Manual, Guidelines for Collecting and Interpreting Innovation Data (Third Edition, 2005). The topics covered here are similar to those included in previous issues of this release; however, as outlined in the Introductory Notes, these data are not directly comparable to those in earlier issues. The majority of survey questions associated with the topics included here were only asked of businesses that had recorded some form of innovative activity during the reference period. Where this is not the case, it is clearly noted in table headings, footnotes and commentary.

The BCS collects a wide range of other topics related to more general business practices and characteristics; estimates for these can be cross-classified by innovation status. These outputs present the user with the opportunity to directly compare the characteristics of innovation-active businesses with those for non innovation-active businesses. These data are included as part of the third release from the BCS, see Explanatory Note 34. For general information about the breadth of innovation statistics produced and released by the ABS, please refer to the Appendix 1: ABS Collection of Innovation Statistics.

Commentary included in this section is sourced from both the tables presented here and data cubes that accompany this release.
