SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Second slowest increase of households in Australia

The number of households in South Australia is projected to increase by between 30% and 35%, from 626,500 in 2006 to between 816,300 and 848,900 in 2031. This low growth rate, the second slowest of the states and territories, is related to the relatively low population growth projected for South Australia (25% compared to 39% for all Australia) over the 25 years to 2031.

Lone person households are projected to experience the fastest growth of all household types in South Australia, increasing by between 44% and 75%, from 170,200 in 2006 to between 244,400 and 298,000 households in 2031. Lone person households comprised around 27% of all households in South Australia in 2006 (equal with Tasmania as the highest proportion of the states and territories) and are projected to account for around one-third (30% and 35%) of all households by 2031. Family households are projected to increase from 436,800 households in 2006 to between 529,800 and 549,100 households in 2031, an increase of between 21% and 26%.

Average household size

South Australia's average household size of 2.5 persons per household in 2006 was the equal smallest of the states and territories (equal to Tasmania) and is projected to decline to 2.3 persons per household by 2031. By then, only Tasmania is projected to have a comparable or lower average household size (between 2.2 and 2.3). Australia's average household size in 2031 is projected to be between 2.4 and 2.5 people per household.

Slow growth in number of families

The number of families in South Australia is projected to increase from 441,700 in 2006 to between 535,700 and 555,200 in 2031. This growth (between 21% and 26% over the period) is the second slowest of the states and territories, faster only than Tasmania.

In 2006, couple families with children were the most common family type in South Australia, making up 42% of all families. By 2031, this family type is projected to account for 27% (Series III) to 38% (Series I) of all families in South Australia, resulting from a projected growth in Series I and Series II of 15% and 2% respectively, and a decline of 21% in Series III.

In contrast, couple families without children are projected to experience growth in all three series, increasing by between 39% and 50%. This family type is projected to account for between 44% and 50% of all families in South Australia by 2031, from 40% in 2006. This growth projects couple families without children overtaking couple families with children in 2008 in Series II and Series III, and 2010 in Series I.

One-parent families are also projected to increase, although at a slower rate than for Australia overall. In 2006, there were an estimated 72,300 one-parent families in South Australia; by 2031 there are projected to be between 87,800 and 114,300 one-parent families, an increase of between 21% and 58%. Nationally, one-parent families are projected to increase by between 40% and 77%.
