Darwin - A social atlas from the ABS

Want to know more about our city ? If the answer is "yes", then the publication Darwin - a Social Atlas released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics will be a mine of information for you.

Darwin - a Social Atlas draws on data collected during the 1996 Census to present social, demographic and economic characteristics of the people of Darwin and Palmerston, through a series of colour maps.

The maps in the atlas are easy to interpret as the distribution of the data is represented by different colours or shadings. A brief commentary explaining the main features and characteristics also accompanies each map.

The Acting Regional Director of the ABS for the Northern Territory, Mr Dan Black, who presented a copy of the new publication to Acting Lord Mayor, Alderman Pat Burke and Mayor of Palmerston, Mr Kevin Diflo said the Social Atlas for Darwin had a range of maps including population, ethnicity, education, families, income, labour force, transport and dwellings.

"It really is an important reference to help us all better understand our region, particularly at a time of high population growth. Business may use it to plan operations, government and community groups may use it to plan for infrastructure and service delivery," said Mr Black at the launch.

"The atlas is an easy way to access the power of Census information to assist informed decision making, using as its base resource the very successful 1996 Census."

Both Mr Burke and Mr Diflo acknowledged the importance of high quality social and economic data to assist Government and business in the rapidly growing region of Darwin and Palmerston.

They agreed that whether it is helping to plan for the future of the expanding region, or to help make decisions now about life in Darwin and Palmerston, the social atlas will provide everyone with a valuable information resource.

Darwin - a Social Atlas is available from the ABS Bookshop, 5th Floor, 81 Smith Street, Darwin.
