Grape production in Victoria is concentrated in the Mallee Statistical Division.

Grape production continues to grow as does the value of the wine produced. From 1997 to 2002, the area of bearing vines increased by 64%.

Data for 2001-02 indicated there were 35,000 hectares of bearing vines in Victoria and a further 3,600 hectares planted but not yet bearing fruit. A total of 514,100 tonnes of grapes were produced, with most (66%) grown for winemaking.

Four varieties of grapes accounted for nearly two thirds of all production: sultana (168,300 tonnes), chardonnay (67,600 tonnes), cabernet sauvignon (51,100 tonnes) and shiraz (50,100 tonnes). White grape production (329,800 tonnes) exceeded red grape production (184,300 tonnes).
