At 30 June 2003, the Victorian meat cattle herd stood at 2.5 million, with the highest numbers in the Western District and Gippsland Statistical Divisions.

At 30 June 2003, most meat cattle in Victoria were found in the Western District Statistical Division (665,000). This was followed by the Gippsland Statistical Division with 377,500 and the Goulburn Statistical Division with 335,200.
