WHAT'S NEW AT ABS ... 2011 Census of Population and Housing Local & Regional Engagement Strategy, 2011 was released 13 February 2009. The aim of this brochure is to help the ABS count everyone in Australia during the 2011 Census. The ABS will be seeking the advice and support of community focussed and government organisations in the preparations for the 2011 Census. The ABS is aware of the need to focus on improving coverage of the Census to ensure the best possible count. We aim to do this through initiatives that:
We are looking to establish a network of organisations that are interested in the Census and making sure their community counts. We aim to involve this network of organisations in these initiatives. Environmental views and behaviour, 2007-2008 (cat. no. 4626.0.55.001) was released 15 January 2009. These spreadsheets contain data on people's views and practices on environmental issues, from the Environmental Views and Behaviour Survey conducted throughout Australia as part of the 2007-08 Multi-Purpose Household Survey (MPHS). The Environmental Views and Behaviour Survey collected information from individuals aged 18 years and over about their views and practices on environmental issues, over a twelve month period from the date of interview. Topics in the survey include; environmental concerns, personal energy and water use, waste collection and disposal and environmental involvement. Some selected results include:
Schools, Australia, Preliminary, 2008 (cat. no. 4220.0) was released 29 January 2009. This release contains a summary of state, territory and national data for the broad categories of schools, students and staff at the 2008 school census date of the 1st August. More detailed data, including derived participation and progression measures, will be published in the Final publication, due out in March 2009, or in the detailed Data Cubes and spreadsheets subsequently published on the ABS website. Education News, Feb 2009 (cat. no. 1330.0) was released 5 February 2009. Education News keeps teachers and students up to date with ABS resources and data that is relevant to the school's sector. This newsletter highlights the latest curriculum related teaching resources, student activities and statistical tools that have been developed by ABS Education Services as well as other ABS resources that are useful for schools. Value of Principal Agricultural Commodities Produced, Australia, Preliminary, 2007-08 (cat. no. 7501.0) was released 10 February 2009. This publication contains preliminary estimates of the gross values of production for principal agricultural commodities for all states, territories and Australia for the financial year 2007-08. Wheat Use and Stocks, Australia, Dec 2008 (cat. no. 7307.0) was released 10 February 2009. This publication is the first release of estimates of wheat grain stocks and of wheat grain used, or committed for export or domestic use. These estimates are compiled from various surveys conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), including the Grain Handlers Stocks Survey, Wheat Use Survey, Wheat Export Sales Survey, and from administrative data relating to wheat grain exports. Estimates from these surveys are combined with final export trade data to provide monthly estimates of the volume of wheat grain stored, used, or committed for use. ABS Agriculture Statistics Collection Strategy - 2008-09 and beyond, 2009 (cat. no. 7105.0) was released 2 February 2009. This information paper outlines the strategy for the 2008-09 ABS Agricultural Survey. This is the second in a series of three papers resulting from the review of the ABS Agriculture Statistics Program. The first paper, ABS Agriculture Statistics Strategy - 2008-09 and beyond, 2008-09 (cat. no. 7105.0), presented the ABS' understanding of the key agricultural policy issue imperatives and areas of priority for statistical data development. It also outlined proposed changes to the future ABS Agricultural Survey program, aimed at improving the statistical information base relevant to the priority areas. This second paper outlines the direction and content for the 2008-09 Agricultural Survey. The strategy and survey proposal outlined in this paper is based on an assumed level of funding. Should this level of funding not eventuate, a reduction in the sample size and/or a reduction in the level of detail collected will result. The third and final paper will address the proposed strategy for the 2009-10 Agricultural Survey and subsequent ABS Agricultural Surveys/Censuses. Information Paper: Producing national estimates from State Health Surveys, 2004 (cat. no. 4375.0.55.001) was released 27 January 2009. This information paper reports on a recent ABS project which pooled data from state and territory health surveys. It details the methods used to pool the data and the data quality investigations that were undertaken. It also reports experimental national estimates of several chronic disease risk factors produced from the pooled national dataset. A brief summary of current state health survey methodology is included, along with a description of potential benefits of a harmonised national surveillance system, and an overview of the technical, methodological and practical issues that need to be addressed in pooling data from multiple surveys (whether in health or other topics). Employment and Earnings, Public Sector, Australia, 2007-08 (cat. no. 6248.0.55.002) was released 12 February 2009. This publication contains estimates of number of public sector employees and gross earnings by level of government by state. Innovation and Technology Update, Feb 2009 (cat. no. 8101.0) was released 13 February 2009. This half yearly electronic Newsletter provides information on statistical developments and publications in research and experimental development, innovation, and information and communication technology fields. Managing ABS Confidentialised Unit Record Files (CURFs): A Step by Step Guide, Feb 2009 (cat. no. 1406.0.55.004) was released 9 February 2009. This guide provides users of ABS microdata with an overview of the process of applying for CURFs, and information about managing CURF access and data. The guide is written for CURF Individual Users, Contact Officers, Responsible Officers, and Consultants and their Sponsoring Organisation. It explains the roles and responsibilities of each. Microdata: Personal Fraud, Expanded CURF, Australia, 2007 (cat. no. 4528.0.55.001) was released 27 January 2009. Microdata available on this expanded Confidentialised Unit Record File (CURF) were compiled from the Personal Fraud topic in the 2007-2008 Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS). No Basic CURF has been released on this topic from this Survey. Expanded CURFs are available only through the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL), through which users are able to tabulate, manipulate and analyse data to their individual specifications. See the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL) User Guide for advice on this system. The ABS has taken steps to confidentialise the microdata in such a way as to maximise the usefulness of the content while maintaining the confidentiality of respondents to ABS statistical collections. A technical manual explaining data content, technical details and conditions of use for this CURF is available through a link on the Explanatory Notes tab of this record, along with a data items list. This product presents a series of matrices that link to ABS summary data on migrants. Where available, this will include a broad selection of demographic, geographic, socio-economic and collection specific data items. The statistical coverage includes topics such as Population Characteristics, Labour (Employment), Family and Community, Health, Education and Training, Housing, Personal and Household Finances, Culture and Leisure and Crime and Justice. The matrices also include a link to a glossary of migrant related terms and, for each selected ABS product, links to their main features and to detailed information on the source collection. The ABS is facing a tight budget situation in 2008-09, which has led to a range of reductions in the ABS work program. The Australian Statistician, Brian Pink, has outlined a number of strategies to address the situation in the document Changes to the ABS survey program for 2008-09 on the ABS Website. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) website provides the expected release details for all statistical products due for publication in the coming six months. The web page 'Releases Scheduled for the Next Six Months' is revised on the ABS website at the beginning of each month. This six-month forecasting is intended to keep clients informed about products and when they will become available. All ABS core statistical and other statistical publications that usually have a catalogue number will be detailed as well as prominent non-statistical publications such as the ABS Annual Report and Australian Statistics Advisory Council Annual Report.
