At 30 June 2003, there were estimated to be a greater proportion of females to males in Tasmania, 50.7% compared to 49.3%. The proportion of females in the population varied from 50.8% in the Greater Hobart-Southern Region, to 50.7% in the Northern Region and 50.5% in the Mersey-Lyell Region.

Children aged 0-14 years - Some 20.4% of Tasmania's population were aged 0-14 years. The Mersey-Lyell Region had the highest proportion of its population aged 0-14 years (21.1% of the region's population). The local government area with the greatest proportion of its population aged 0-14 years was Brighton, with 28.1% of its population in this age group.

People aged 15-64 years -Some 65.4% of Tasmania's population were aged 15-64 years. The Greater Hobart-Southern Region had the highest proportion of its population aged 15-64 years (66.1% of the region's population).

People aged 65 years and over - Some 67,526 Tasmanians were aged 65 years and over (14.2% of all Tasmanians). The Northern Region and the Mersey-Lyell Region both had the highest proportion of its population aged 65 years and over (14.4% of the region's population). Males aged 65 years and over accounted for 6.3% of the Tasmanian population. The local government areas with the greatest proportion of males aged 65 years and over were Glamorgan/Spring Bay with 10.0% and Tasman, with 8.8%. Females aged 65 years and over accounted for 7.9% of the Tasmanian population. The local government areas with the greatest proportions of females aged 65 years and over were Glamorgan/Spring Bay with 9.6%, Glenorchy with 9.4% and Devonport with 9.4%.
