Employed full time
The average number of Australian Capital Territory (ACT) usual residents employed full time in the 12 months ending May 2010 was 147,000, similar to the previous year (147,300), and up 9.4% (+12,600) from May 2005 (134,400). The average number of people employed full time in Australia in the 12 months ending May 2010 was 7.6 million, down 0.7% (-55,000) from the year to May 2009 (7.7 million) and up 8.9% (623,800) from the 12 months ending May 2005 (7 million).
From the 12 months ending May 2005 to the 12 months ending May 2010 the number of full time employed persons in the 65 years and over age group in the ACT experienced the strongest growth of all age groups up 1,100 (+110%). Nationally, the 65 years and over age group experienced the strongest growth in the number of employed persons with an increase of 54,300 (+63.5%).
Employed part time
The average number of ACT usual residents employed part time in the 12 months ending May 2010 was 49,600, up 1.8% from the previous year (48,700). Nationally, the average number of people employed part time in the 12 months ending May 2010 was 3.2 million, up 5% (+158,800) from 2009 (3.1 million).
The proportion of people employed part time, aged 15-24 years, has consistently been higher than any other age group in the ACT and nationally. However, the proportion in the ACT has declined from 35.8% in 2005 to 34.4% in 2010, while nationally the decline was from 28.6% in 2005 to 27.2% in 2010.

Based on occupation by major group, Professionals made up the largest proportion of employed persons in the ACT for the May 2010 quarter (33.1%). The group with the largest increase over the five years (2005 to 2010) was Professionals, with 15,300 more people employed in the May 2010 quarter than in 2005. The group experiencing the largest decrease was Sales Workers, falling 1,300 persons from the quarter ending May 2005 to 2010.

This was also the industry with the largest increase in employed persons between the quarter ending May 2005 and quarter ending May 2010 (10,700 persons).

Usual hours worked by employed persons, on average, during the 12 months ending May 2010 differed between the ACT and Australia. A smaller proportion of full-time workers in the ACT worked 41 hours or more per week (33.3%) compared with Australia (37.3%). However, a larger proportion of ACT full-time employed (65.1%) worked between 35-40 hours than the national average (60.8%). In the 12 months ending May 2010 the most common hours usually worked by people employed part time in the ACT and Australia were 16-29 hours per week (ACT 41.3%, Australia 42.7%).

In trend terms, Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) of $1,169 for the ACT in February 2010 were $200 higher than the national average of $969. AWE increased 7.2% between February 2009 and February 2010 for the ACT (from $1,090 to $1,169) and 5.8% for Australia (from $916 to $969).
Underutilisation rate
LABOUR FORCE UNDERUTILISATION RATE, Trend
In trend terms, the labour force underutilisation rate for Australia generally fell between May 2004 and May 2008 to a low of 10.0% and has since risen to 12.3% in May 2010. Over the same period, the labour force underutilisation rate for ACT has increased by only 0.7 percentage points (8.7% in the May quarter 2004 to 9.4% in the May quarter 2010).
