WHEAT

In 2010, total wheat production in Australia was 21.8 million tonnes. The historical high was 26.1 million tonnes in 2004. The area of land under cultivation for wheat in 2010 was 13.9 million hectares, which is the historical high.

Around the states, wheat production and area vary significantly but tend to have a similar ratio between production and land. However, in recent years production has increased at greater levels than area. In New South Wales and Victoria this occurred during the 1960s. In Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia it was in the 1980s and in Tasmania it was the 1990s.
