GEOGRAPHICAL RESIDENCE

The proportion of people exposed to at least one scam varied across the states and territories, with the proportion of people exposed in Tasmania (40.8%) and the Australian Capital Territory (39.5%) both higher than the proportion nationally (35.8%).

The likelihood of being exposed to a scam also varied between different geographical regions. People residing in outer regional areas were less likely than the general population to be exposed to at least one scam (32.7% compared to 35.8%). Of the different types of scams, people in an outer regional area were less likely to be exposed to a fake notification or offer from a bank or financial institution (13.4% compared to 15.8%), and people living in remote areas were less likely to be exposed to an invitation into a pyramid selling scheme than the general population (4.0% compared to 6.2%).
