Of all persons employed in cultural industries for their main job in 2011, 181,159 (50.6%) were males and 177,003 (49.4%) were females. By comparison, of all employed persons, 53.4% were males and 46.6% were females.

The top three cultural industries that attracted a higher proportion of males than females were Music and Other Sound Recording Activities (81.5%), Post-Production Services and Other Motion Picture and Video Activities (70.8%) and Nature Reserves and Conservation Parks Operation industry (68.4%). The top three cultural industries where females were noticeably predominant were Libraries and Archives (75.2%), Arts Education industry (73.5%) and Newspaper and Book Retailing (64.3%).
