ADVERTISED DOWNLOAD SPEED

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were asked to report the number of subscribers as at 31 December 2011, by the advertised download speed (in ranges) of access connection.

The number of subscribers accessing the internet increased in each of the speed ranges of 1.5Mbps or greater, and decreased in both of the two lowest speed ranges (less than 256kbps, and 256kbps to less than 1.5Mbps).

The 1.5Mbps to 8Mbps speed range had the highest number of subscribers, at 5.1 million, followed by the 8Mbps to 24Mbps speed range, at almost 4.0 million subscribers.

Since 30 June 2011, subscriber numbers in the two highest speed ranges (24Mbps to less than 100Mbps, and 100Mbps or greater) have increased the most in percentage terms, at 21.6% and 80.0% respectively.
