SUMMARY

In 2009-10, there were a total of 14,007 defendants finalised in Australia's criminal courts with at least one federal offence: 765 in the Higher Courts; 13,028 in the Magistrates' Courts; and 214 in the Children's Courts.

There were 13,156 persons and 851 organisations finalised in 2009-10, compared to 12,751 persons and 1,251 organisations in 2008-09. Just under two thirds (64% or 8,909) of all finalised defendants were male while 29% (4,009) were female.

Across all three court levels, 76% of defendants finalised were proven guilty of at least one federal offence. Of those proven guilty, 19% (2,023) were sentenced to a custodial order.

The 14,007 defendants represented a total of 49,009 federal offences finalised; an average of 3.5 offences per defendant. There were 2,686 federal offences finalised in the Higher Courts; 45,979 in the Magistrates' Courts; and 344 in the Children's Courts.
