RELEASE OF 2008-09 MINING INDUSTRY STATISTICS

On 28 May 2010, the ABS released Australian Industry, 2008-09 (cat. no. 8155.0). This publication contains the results of the 2008-09 Economic Activity Survey (EAS) which is one of the main sources of mining industry statistics. It presents information about the operation and financial performance of mining and other industries in the public trading and private sectors.

The Economic Activity Survey (EAS) directly collects this information from a sample of business entities in most industries of the Australian economy. As well, administrative by-product data from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) are incorporated with the directly collected survey data, thereby improving the coverage and quality of the data without a corresponding increase in provider load.

Included in the results are estimates for employment; income; expenses; industry value added; operating profit before tax; capital expenditure; and selected components of these aggregates and derivations. State/territory estimates of income, employment, and wages and salaries, at the division level are also available. Note: a supplementary data cube presenting information on mineral production will be released in September 2010.

Particular highlights from this release show that between 2007-08 and 2008-09, the mining industry recorded the largest absolute increase ($47.2 billion) in total income of all selected industries as well as the highest percentage increase at 34.7%. Despite an increase in total expenses of 32.6% ($30.0b), the mining industry experienced a 38.6% increase in operating profit before tax of $17.7b.
