To monitor the nature and distribution of research and development activity in Australia.
The R&D surveys collect estimates of R&D expenditure and human resources devoted to R&D by business enterprises, general government, private non-profit organisations and higher education organisations in Australia.
The surveys are based on a complete enumeration of businesses and organisations identified by the ABS as likely R&D performers.
Data are collected by mail questionnaire.
Data are available for the manufacture of motor vehicles and parts, transport equipment and for transport as an economic objective. Detailed data on the transport industries are not published but are available on request.
Frequency of Data Availability
Data are released annually and biennially.
The Business Enterprises, General Government, Private Non-Profit, and Higher Education Organisations surveys were first conducted by the ABS in 1976-77, 1978-79, 1978-79 and 1978, respectively.
