13th series review of the Consumer Price Index

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has begun the 13th series review of the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Such reviews are carried out about every five years to ensure the CPI reflects recent consumer expenditure patterns and that the measure remains relevant to user needs.

Major issues for the review include determining the principal purpose of the CPI, its frequency of publication, and population and regional coverage. These and other issues are discussed in Information Paper: Issues to be Considered During the 13th Series Australian Consumer Price Index Review (cat. no. 6451.0) which was released today by the ABS and is available from ABS Bookshops.

The CPI is one of the best known and most widely used of the statistics produced by the ABS. In one way or another it features in the lives of most Australians.

For this reason, the ABS, through advertisements tomorrow in major Australian newspapers, invites users of the CPI to make submissions to the review.

Results of the review will be incorporated into the March quarter 1998 CPI to be published in late April 1998.
