Activities

Respondents were asked whether they had any involvement in each of the activities listed below in the last 12 months. It was left to the respondent to interpret what was meant by each activity.

This refers to earnings, received or expected to be received from the person's involvement in the activity during the 12 months prior to interview, before income tax is taken out but after business expenses have been deducted.

Annual income from all activities

This refers to combined earnings, received or expected to be received from the person's involvement in all of the culture and leisure activities during the 12 months prior to interview, before income tax is taken out but after business expenses have been deducted.

Country of birth

Birthplace is classified according to the Standard Australian Classification of Countries (SACC) (cat. no. 1269.0).

Employed

All persons aged 15 years and over who, during the reference week:

• worked for one hour or more for pay, profit, commission or payment in kind in a job or business, or on a farm (comprising employees, employers and own account workers); or
• worked for one hour or more without pay in a family business or on a farm (i.e. contributing family workers); or
• were employees who had a job but were not at work and were:
  • away from work for less than four weeks up to the end of the reference week; or
  • away from work for more than four weeks up to the end of the reference week and received pay for some or all of the four week period to the end of the reference week; or
  • away from work as a standard work or shift arrangement; or
  • on strike or locked out; or
  • on workers' compensation and expected to return to their job; or
• were employers or own account workers, who had a job, business or farm, but were not at work.

Employed persons who usually worked 35 hours or more a week (in all jobs) and those who, although usually working less than 35 hours a week, worked 35 hours or more during the reference week.

Employed part-time

Employed persons who usually worked less than 35 hours a week (in all jobs) and either did so during the reference week, or were not at work in the reference week.

Frequency of involvement

This refers to the average number of hours of involvement in the activity for the week(s) during which the person was involved in the 12 months prior to interview.

Hobby activity

Activities which were undertaken solely for the person's own use or for the use of their family or friends were classified as hobby activities. For this survey, data on hobby activities was only collected for art and craft, writing and music.

Involvement

A person is classified as having involvement (or work involvement) in a culture and leisure activity if they had any participation, paid or unpaid, in any one of the activities in the survey and some, or all, of that participation was not for the person’s own use or for the use of their family or friends (i.e. was not a hobby activity).

Labour force status

A classification of the civilian population aged 15 years and over into employed, unemployed or not in the labour force, as defined. The definitions conform closely to the international standard definitions adopted by the International Conferences of Labour Statisticians.

Main English speaking countries

This refers to the main countries from which Australia receives, or has received, significant numbers of overseas settlers who are likely to speak English. These countries comprise the United Kingdom and Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, the United States of America and South Africa.

Main job

Where a person has more than one job, it was the respondent's decision as to which was the main job. It does not apply to persons who were unemployed or not in the labour force.

Not in the labour force

Persons who were not in the categories employed or unemployed as defined.

Number of weeks of involvement

This refers to the number of weeks during which the person was involved in the 12 months prior to interview, whether it was for one hour during the week or full-time.

Paid involvement

This includes involvement for which payment had already been received, or where payment had not yet been received for the finished product but was expected. This can include involvement where creators have been guaranteed payment on completion of their work, exhibits or artworks that may or may not be sold and writing that has not yet been accepted for publication. Payment also includes the provision of goods and services.

Participation rate

For any group, this is the number of persons involved in the selected culture or leisure activities, expressed as a percentage of the civilian population in the same group.

Rest of Australia

This category includes all of the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory, and the six states outside of the capital cities. Refer also to State capital cities.

Relevant qualification

Respondents were asked whether they had ever completed a course or any other qualification related to activities they were involved in. It was the respondent's decision whether their course or qualification was related to a particular activity. Respondents were only asked about relevant qualifications for selected activities.

Some paid involvement

This category includes all persons who received financial payment or goods and services for their involvement, regardless of whether or not they had some unpaid involvement.

State capital cities

The six state capital cities are the Statistical Divisions for those capital cities as defined in Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) (cat. no. 1216.0).

Unemployed

Persons aged 15 years and over who were not employed during the reference week, and:

• had actively looked for full-time or part-time work at any time in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and were available for work in the reference week; or
• were waiting to start a new job within four weeks from the end of the reference week and could have started in the reference week if the job had been available then.

This includes any unpaid involvement in the selected culture and leisure activities. It excludes involvement where goods and services were received or expected to be received (included in Paid involvement), and activities which were undertaken solely for the person's own use or for the use of their family or friends (classified as Hobby activity).
