Purpose

To provide reliable road,
rail, sea and air statistics on freight moved in Australia.

Description

The Freight Movements Surveys (FMS) covers freight moved by the four transport modes (road, rail, sea and air). FMS was first introduced as a quarterly survey in June quarter 1994. It replaced the Interstate Freight Movement Survey which ceased in the same quarter. The road component of the survey was discontinued in 1995 because of concerns about the survey methodology. However, some statistics from the Rail, Sea and Air modes are available since June 1994. A new methodology to produce annual estimates of freight moved by road has been introduced and applied to the latest collection which covers the 12 month period ending 31 March 2001. Results of the 2000-2001 FMS covering all four modes are expected to be released in December 2001.

For the road mode data is collected from a sample of owners of articulated trucks based on a selection of vehicles from the registration system.

For the rail, sea and air modes data is compiled from a census of transport operators.

Data are collected by mail questionnaire.
