One in ten NSW households face emergency:ABS Over one in ten New South Wales households were faced with an emergency in the two years to October 2003, however the majority of households in NSW do not prepare for such emergencies, according to new figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In the two years to October 2003, 11% of NSW households were faced with an emergency. Storm, wind or hail was the most common type of emergency (experienced by 6% of all households), while bushfire was experienced by around 4% of all households. Over three-quarters (79%) of households with more than one person had no action plan for fire, storms or floods. Similarly, 73% of people who lived on their own had no action plan. Almost one-third of NSW households did not keep a list of emergency phone numbers, the survey also found. The survey collected data on experience of emergencies such as fires, floods and storms. Emergencies of a purely medical nature were excluded. Measures of preparedness for emergencies, such as whether a household had an action plan for what to do in an emergency were also surveyed.
