The Australian Bureau of Statistics collects disability information for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population across four surveys. These include the Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers, the Short Disability Module in both the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Social surveys and four questions on Need for Assistance in the Census. This information paper examines these different ABS sources of disability data for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, and indicates what information can be obtained from each source. The paper will present some basic analyses of the differences between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disability populations identified by the different question sets and give some advice on the best use of each source of disability data.
