Purpose

To measure changes in prices of services provided by establishments classified to ANZSIC Division I, Transport and Storage and ANZSIC Division L, Property and Business Services.

Description

In recognition of the increasing contribution of service industries to the Australian economy, the ABS has embarked on a long-term development program to progressively extend the scope of the producer price indexes into the service sectors of the economy.

For most industries, quarterly index numbers are presented back to the September quarter 1998. The service industry price indexes are being developed within the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) framework. Indexes have been established for most of the industry classes within the
Transport and Storage Division and Property and Business Services Division of the ANZSIC. In respect of the transport industry, indexes are being compiled for important freight transport industries - road, rail, sea and air.

Because of the wide range of diverse industries involved, customised approaches to price collection have been adopted on a case-by-case basis. Extensive consultation was undertaken with industry associations and individual businesses to determine the most viable approach. An important consideration was to keep the workload involved in businesses completing their forms to a minimum.
