DESCRIPTION

The ABS collects and disseminates a range of statistics on culture and leisure activities. These include attendance at cultural venues, sports attendance, participation in sporting activities and work in culture and leisure activities.

Data are collected through the Monthly Population Survey and the Population Survey Monitor, a quarterly household survey, conducted throughout Australia by the ABS. The Monthly Population Survey provides a range of demographic and family information on people aged 15 and over (Labour Force Survey). The Population Survey Monitor provides family information, such as relationship in household and marital status, for persons aged 18 and over (Household Use of Information Technology). Statistics on children's participation in sport were collected during 1995-96 and 1996-97.
