Since 1985 net overseas migration in Tasmania has been variable but positive each year, as shown in the figure below. Estimates for net overseas migration in Tasmania have been between 700 and 1045 persons per year from 2003 to 2005, which includes an adjustment for change in travel intention and multiple movement (migration adjustment). In Tasmania, the rate of population increase related to overseas migration has always been low. In the year ended 31 December 2005, the rate of increase attributed to overseas migration was estimated to be 0.18%; the Australian rate for the same period was 0.67%.
