South Australia's contribution to the nation examined - ABS How South Australia contributes to the national soci-economic fabric is examined in this year's South Australian Year Book 1999,released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Population growth, participation in education, economic activity, labour force trends, cultural events and overseas trade are among the key state issues which are covered in this edition of the Year book It has become an invaluable reference for students, teachers, researchers, journalists, planners, decision makers and general readers. A detailed index enables users to find elusive facts. Some snippets from the Year Book show that in the year ended December 1997 tourism continued to grow with room nights occupied increasing by 3.1% while occupancy rates increased to 54% . The State wine industry also continued to flourish, with exports increasing by 42% in value from $398m in 1996-97 to $564m in 1997-98. In this year's edition a special feature article chronologically lists key historical events, ranging from the first recorded sighting (in 1627) of the South Australian coastline by Dutch seafarers to the successful completion of the 1998 Festival of Arts and Fringe events.
