DESCRIPTION

This survey provides information on a number of housing related topics including the condition and age of Australian housing stock, changes in ownership levels and household income levels compared to housing costs. The most recent survey also provides information on people's recent housing history, changes in household composition over time, and the number and characteristics of visitors who regularly stay overnight or on a more extended basis.

Data from this survey are used to set benchmarks for affordability, suitability and adequacy of housing and to assist in the administration, evaluation and planning of housing services and programs. The survey provides information on household characteristics including the relationship between number of children and number of bedrooms in a dwelling.

SCOPE

All persons aged 15 years and over in private dwellings (including caravan parks) except members of the permanent Australian defence forces, certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependants) stationed in Australia and overseas residents visiting Australia. The survey is conducted in both urban and rural areas in all States and Territories, but since 1997 excludes persons living in some remote and sparsely settled parts of Australia.
