OVERVIEW
Agriculture Western Australia (along with Industry bodies) approached the ABS with a request for data from Western Australia sheep and beef meat producers.
The ABS collected supplementary information from approximately 1,100 agricultural establishments in Western Australia which reported information on sheep and/or beef cattle in the 1996-97 Agricultural Census. It is a one-off two phased survey, in which a mailed questionnaire was used to collect the data.
The survey provided these industries with comprehensive, accurate information on the future production and turn-off intentions of producers, along with an up-to-date, i.e timely, picture of levels (and changes in levels) of stocks held.
Information collected included:
- number of sheep held on the property
- number of beef cattle for meat production held on the property
- lambing and calving expectations
- turn-off and marketing options by month for
(a) sheep and cattle for slaughter; and
(b) sheep intended for live export.
PURPOSE
The results of the survey were used to determine the future intentions of Western Australian sheep and beef meat producers in relation to the level of production, time of turn-off, and marketing options. This information is necessary for the planning activities of producers, processors, marketing companies, agro-political bodies and government agencies.
SCOPE
The scope was restricted to those agricultural establishments in Western Australia who reported either beef and/or cattle on the 1996-97 Agriculture Census (and are still in business).
