    OVERVIEW

    Leisure Participation, Victoria was conducted in Victoria during October 1996 as a supplement to the Monthly Population Survey. Victorian government agencies which supported the survey included: Arts Victoria, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Tourism Victoria, Victorian Casino and Gaming Authority, and Sport and Recreation Victoria. The target population was persons aged 15 years and over. The survey sought information on a wide range of leisure activities, including: participation in sport and other leisure activities, visits to recreational areas such as National Parks, attendance at cultural and annual events, and gambling.

    PURPOSE

    To obtain information on Victorian participation in a wide range of sport, leisure and cultural activities.

    SCOPE

    The survey collects information by personal interview from usual residents of private dwellings in Victoria aged 15 and over. Private dwellings are houses, flats, home units, caravans, garages, tents and other structures that are used as places of residence at the time of interview. Long-stay caravan parks are also included. These are distinct from special dwellings which include hotels, boarding schools, boarding houses and institutions. Residents of special dwellings are excluded.

    The survey also excludes households which contain members of non-Australian defence forces stationed in Australia and diplomatic personnel of overseas governments.

    Conceptual framework

    Participation in sport or physical recreation activity includes being a player, coach, umpire or administrator. Attendance measures attendance in the twelve months to October 1996.

    Persons aged 15 years and over: attendance at cultural activities, attendance at annual events, participation in sport or physical recreation activity and visits to recreation areas by age group and by sex

    Persons aged 18 years and over: participation in gambling activities by age group and by sex

    Other concepts (summary)

    Cultural activity, annual event, sport/physical recreation, recreation area visits, and gambling categories were devised in consultation with State government agencies, and refined through 2 pilot tests to reflect the most popular events/activities in these categories.
