    OVERVIEW

    South Australia State Supplementary Survey - topic selected by State Statistical Priorities Committee and endorsed by Population Statistics Priorities Committee

    PURPOSE

    To assess the patterns of change occurring in the "working life" of women and problems arising from leaving and returning to the workforce. Identification of barriers to women returning to work.

    SCOPE

    Scope

    Women aged 18-59 years (excluding full-time students under 25 years of age) who are usual residents of private dwellings and caravan parks except:

    1. members of the permanent defence forces;

    2. certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, customarily excluded from census and estimated populations;

    3. overseas residents in Australia; and

    4. members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependants) stationed in Australia.

    Coverage

    As per the Labour Force Survey, coverage rules are applied which aim to ensure that each person is associated with only one dwelling, and hence has only one chance of selection. The chance of a person being enumerated at two separate dwellings in the one survey is considered to be negligible.

    Persons who are away from their usual residence for six weeks or less at the time of interview are enumerated at their usual residence (relevant information may be obtained from other usual residents present at the time of the survey)

    DATA DETAIL

    Conceptual framework

    Information was collected for females aged 18-59 years excluding full-time students aged under 25 years. Data was collected on the number and types of changes to women's working lives and the reasons for making these changes. The changes of interest were:

    • women leaving one employer and starting work within 3 months with another
    • breaks women had from work of more than 3 months duration
    • women changing their working arrangements

    Other data items included were qualifications, activities of women not employed, basis of payment for women who work from home, child-care arrangements, source of income received during breaks and difficulties experienced at work after changes had occurred.

    Main outputs

    Women 18-59: selected characteristics by employment status

    Women employed at some time during 1982-92: selected characteristics by various changes to their working life, details of most recent working life change

    Women not employed during 1982-92: reason not employed, current activities

    Classifications

    Standard Monthly Population Survey classifications including industry and occupation.

    Other concepts (summary)
