AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

The Career Experience Survey (CES)

OVERVIEW

The Career Experience Survey (CES) was an irregular survey last conducted in November 2002 as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey. It provided information about workplace flexibility, barriers to career development and workers with family responsibilities. The scope of the survey was persons aged 15 years and over.

The CES collected data on the career experiences of employees, including details of the current job and changes in the job such as promotions, transfers and training opportunities. Other information available includes breaks from work for 6 months or more and the reasons for those breaks, educational attainment, number of dependent children, type of leave taken when the youngest child was born and child care arrangements. Data items contained within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data Items Relevant to Migrants and Ethnicity.

The CES survey was first conducted in February 1993 then repeated in November in 1996, 1998 and finally 2002. The ABS does not plan to conduct this survey again. Key data items from this discontinued survey are now collected in Labour Mobility, Working Time Arrangements, Pregnancy and Work Transitions and the Survey of Employment Arrangements, Retirement and Superannuation (SEARS).
