SHORT-TERM ARRIVALS BY AIR ON HOLIDAY

  • Over 235,000 overseas visitors arrived for a holiday in Western Australia in the year ending June 2009. The top five countries of origin were the United Kingdom (24%); Singapore (18%); Malaysia (12%); Japan (6%) and New Zealand (just under 5%).
  • More than 52,000 of these visitors arrived in the June quarter 2009, almost 17% more than in the same quarter of the previous year. In particular, there were 2.5 times more (6,500) visitors from Malaysia, which may be attributed to the addition of more low cost carrier services on the Kuala Lumpur to Perth route.
  • The number of visitors from Singapore increased by nearly 3,000 (29%) while the number from Hong Kong more than doubled. Visitors from Indonesia were also significantly higher in percentage terms (36%).
  • In comparison with the same quarter of 2008, the June quarter 2009 saw fewer overseas visitors from Japan (down 34%). According to the Japan National Tourist Organisation, Japanese overseas visits have decreased by 21.3% (June 2008 compared to June 2009). Current economic conditions in Japan and concern over the H1N1 virus may have served as deterrents to international travel over this period.
