Group 23 Music Composition and Publishing consists of units mainly engaged in creating or publishing musical compositions, or in releasing recordings of music or other audio material. Group 23 also includes the wholesaling and retailing of recorded music, audio books and other audio products.


CLASS 231 MUSIC COMPOSITION

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in the activities of composing, arranging and orchestrating music, and song writing.

CLASS 232 MUSIC PUBLISHING

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in acquiring and registering copyrights for musical compositions in accordance with law, and promoting and authorising the use of these compositions in recordings, radio, television, motion pictures, live performances, print or other media. Units in this class represent the interests of the songwriter or other owners of musical compositions to produce revenues from the use of such works, generally through licensing agreements. Music publishers may own music copyrights or act as administrators on behalf of copyright owners. They may also publish sheet music and/or license the use of production or library music.

The products may be sourced via licensing or packaging and distribution deals, or may simply be purchased outright for resale.
