The crude divorce rate is the number of decrees absolute granted during the calendar year per 1,000 estimated resident population.

Until 1975 the divorce rate in Tasmania was consistently below 1.5 per 1,000 population. In 1976, after the passing of the Family Law Act 1975 (Cwlth), the divorce rate jumped to 4.3 per 1,000 population. It has not fallen below 2.5 per 1,000 population since. Tasmania's crude divorce rate is generally similar to Australia's rate and has been slightly higher in recent decades.
