DFAT provides a range of information services to the Australian public and media. It also promotes an accurate, positive and up-to-date image of Australia internationally focussing on technical capabilities, record of innovation, achievements in science and industry, and cultural diversity. On 31 December 2001 the ABC Asia Pacific (ABCAP) television service began broadcasting news and information to countries in the Asia-Pacific region. DFAT manages the contract between the Government and ABCAP.

Detailed information about Australia's foreign and trade policy can be accessed through the DFAT web site, http://www.dfat.gov.au. The department also produces hard copy publications on many foreign and trade policy issues, which are available from the department or from Commonwealth government bookshops. Officials from the department provide regular media briefings on issues of the day. Further information and links are listed in the Bibliography.
