PREVIOUS MARITAL STATUS

In 2009, 95,871 brides (79.8% of all registered marriages) and 93,796 grooms (78.1%) had not been married previously. These proportions are both 0.8 percentage points higher than in 2008, continuing the trend since 2001.

In 70.6% of marriages in 2009 neither party had previously been married, and a further 16.7% were first marriages for one partner.

In 2009, 22,263 brides (18.5% of all brides) and 24,535 grooms (20.4%) registered for marriage had been previously divorced. These proportions are both 0.7 percentage points lower than in 2008.

In 2009, 1,984 brides (1.7% of all brides) and 1,787 grooms (1.5%) registered for marriage had been previously widowed. These proportions are both 0.1 percentage points lower than in 2008, continuing the trend.

Since 1989, the number of widows and widowers remarrying has been steadily decreasing.
