COUNTRY OF BIRTH

In 2009, 58.0% of marriages took place between couples where both parties were born in Australia. A further 11.8% of marriages were between parties born in the same overseas country, and 30.1% marriages featured a bride and a groom who were born in different countries. The proportion of marriages between two Australian born people has fallen from 61.1% in 1989, while the proportion of marriages between two people born in the same overseas country has increased from 8.1% and the proportion of marriages between two people born in different countries fell from 30.8%.

In 2009, the median age of bridegrooms and brides born in Australia was 31.4 years and 29.0 years respectively. Among the countries analysed, the brides and grooms with the youngest median age were born in India (25.5 years and 26.5 years respectively), while the brides and grooms with the oldest median age were born in Italy (41.1 years and 46.2 years respectively).
