ABS Transformation

The evolution of the ABS

The data landscape in Australia and beyond is changing and the ABS is undertaking a major transformation across the organisation.

The transformation is supported by a $257 million Australian Government investment over five years, 2016 to 2020, to modernise our core statistical and enterprise assets. This will build data analytics and data services into our core offerings, enhancing the statistical business systems we use to produce critical information about our economy, society, population and environment.

Embracing new technology and statistical methods, collaborating better with our partners and improving our culture helps to cement our position as the pre-eminent leader in data skills and capability across Australia.

Data acquisition

The ABS National Data Acquisition Centre (NDAC) in Geelong is the national hub for data collection. NDAC takes a user-focused approach to data collection to continually improve the experience of providing information to the ABS.

We are helping to address critical data gaps and barriers to data sharing, as well as reducing data duplication across government agencies.

Your privacy

We are committed to maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information receive and collect. Strong community trust supports high levels of participation in our survey and Census programs so that we can deliver accurate data, statistics and insights back to the people who need them.

We have strong legislative and governance measures in place to ensure privacy is protected, and we work closely with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to align our approaches with community expectations and best practice.
