GLOSSARY

Booster for solar hot water system

Solar hot water systems have boosters to heat water when sunlight is insufficient.

Digital box

Digital boxes include free to air and subscription television recorders and set top boxes.

Instantaneous hot water system

An instantaneous system heats water only as needed and does not use a storage tank. When the hot water tap is turned on, cold water flows through a heat exchanger and the water is heated before passing out of the tap. Provided gas or electricity is always available, users should never run out of hot water. Also known as continuous flow hot water system.

Multiple response

A number of data items from the survey allow a respondent to provide more than one response. These are referred to as multiple response data items.

Separate freezer

A freezer that is not attached or joined to a fridge in any way.

Smart phone

A mobile phone that has the ability to perform many functions of a computer, typically having a touch screen and web access.

Solar electricity

Households with solar panels to generate electricity.

Solar hot water

Solar hot water systems work by using the sun’s rays to heat water. Typically, they consist of solar collector panels and a storage tank. The heat directly warms the water in the collector and flows back to the storage tank pre heated. The system can have boosters to heat water when sunlight is insufficient.

Storage tank hot water system

A storage tank hot water system heats water and stores it in an insulated tank until it is needed. It is possible to run out of hot water if hot water is drawn off faster than the storage tank can be refilled and reheated.

Tablet

A tablet is a small portable computer which you use by touching the screen rather than using a keyboard.
