The Disability Support Pension ensures an adequate level of income for people whose physical, intellectual or psychiatric impairment prevents them from working, or for people who are permanently blind.

As at 1 June 2001 the highest rates of Disability Support Pensioners were found in the local government areas of Central Highlands (76.2 per 1,000 persons) and Tasman (73.9 per 1,000 persons). King Island had the lowest rate of Disability Support Pensioners with 21.5 per 1,000 persons.
