At the 2001 Census, some 82.1% of the 124,078 families counted in Tasmania contained couples. Of these, 36.4% were couples with dependent children, 38.4% were couples without children and 7.3% were couples with non-dependent children. Some 16.5% of Tasmanian families were one-parent families.

Couples with dependent children - Circular Head and Kingborough local government areas (LGAs) had the largest percentage of couples with dependent children, 42.5% and 42.3% respectively. Glamorgan/Spring Bay and Tasman had the smallest percentage of couples with dependent children, 27.0% and 30.9% respectively.

Couples without children - Glamorgan/Spring Bay and Tasman had the largest percentage of couples without children, 54.9% and 51.3% respectively. Brighton had the smallest percentage of couples without children, 26.0%, well below all other LGAs.

Couples with non-dependent children - King Island, Latrobe, and Derwent Valley recorded the largest percentage of couples with non-dependent children, with 9.3%, 8.9% and 8.8% respectively.

One-parent families - Brighton, Glenorchy and Launceston had the largest percentage of one-parent families, with 24.8%, 21.5% and 20.2% respectively.
