In 2003-04, there was an annual average 209,200 employed persons in Tasmania, comprising 114,900 males and 94,300 females. During this period, Retail trade was the largest industry in terms of the annual average number of persons employed with 33,500 employees (16.0% of employed persons). This was followed by Health and community services with 23,700 persons employed (11.3%); Manufacturing with 22,300 persons (10.7%); Agriculture, forestry and fishing with 16,800 persons (8.0%); and Property and business services with 16,600 persons (7.9%).

The Health and community services industry employs the largest number of females at 19,500 (20.7% of employed females), compared to 4,200 males (3.7% of employed males). The Manufacturing industry employs the largest number of males at 18,100 (15.8% of employed males), compared to 4,300 females (4.6%).
